Auction

As Las Vegas celebrates its centenary, BBC News charts its colourful history.
Las Vegas - Spanish for the meadows - was born in 1905 when 110 acres of land were sold off in an auction (pictured here) by a rail operator next to the newly opened Los Angeles to Salt Lake City Railway. Land was sold for $1.25 an acre
